Honduras Tourism by: Wolf Sebring
Honduras Tourism - When you think of tourism in Central America, Honduras is usually the forgotten paradise. This is because Honduras is relatively new at opening its doors to the foreign investor, retiree, and backpacker. But they are quickly catching on as more and more seek to escape the high prices of other Caribbean destinations and see what Honduras has to offer. Locations in Honduras like Copan, La Ceiba , and Utila are fairly well-known however the rest of this land is still unexplored by the outside traveler. Probably the reason why Honduras is so unknown to the majority of the North America (and the rest of the world) is because the information about this place just does not get distributed to the various advertising mediums. This is really unfortunate because one can have a really nice visit here and return home very satisfied. La Ceiba is the third-largest city in Honduras and it is growing as a tourism spot. In fact, it could become Central America's Capital of Ecotourism in the future because it is in the area of the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve, and the Pico Bonito National Park. A 160-room beach resort, the Palma Real, just opened up in Roma Village which is 20 km to the east of La Ceiba. These parks have attractions for the bird watcher, hiker, the water raft enthusiast, or for sightseeing. Roatan is a location in Honduras where the beaches are said to be ranked among the top waterfront locations in the Caribbean. Activities such as long beach walks, scuba diving and snorkeling are very popular here. Honduras is also the place to see if you want to learn about the Mayan culture. The people of Honduras trace their roots to the ancient Mayan civilization who were the natives before the Spaniards arrived here in the 1500s. Take the opportunity to tour the Copa Ruins which can be reached from San Pedro Sula by bus in about two and one-half hours. The future looks bright for development of the Honduras tourism industry but if you want to see nature that has been untouched for the most part by developers then here is where you want to come. A big advantage also is that Honduras is so close to the United States and lonely about a two and one-half hour flight from the southern population centers there. There is less travel time and more time to enjoy the beauty of nature here. |
