Honduras Exchange Rate - The national currency of Honduras is the Lempira . Its symbol on the monetary exchanges is HNL. Currently, as of April 2007, the exchange rate to the U.S. Dollar is 18.890 Lempira to 1 Dollar. Many places here will take U.S. Dollars but you will more than likely receive your change in Lempira. No import or export restrictions exist for the currency but you should declare large amounts of currency you have when traveling just to avoid any problems in customs.

The NHL is subdivided into centavos and there are 100 centavos to one Lempira. The name of the currency comes from the ruler of the Lenca people in the 16th century, Cacique Lempira. Lempira is renowned for leading a resistance by the indigenous tribes

The current inflation rate of the NHL is 5.7% and the coins come in 10, 20, 50-centavo denominations. Printed notes come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 NHL.

The airports at San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa will have money exchange cages. In order to save on their fees, buy only enough NHL to hold you until you can get to a bank. If you exchange dollars at your hotel, be prepared to pay steep exchange commissions.BELIZEcurrency

Don't carry dollars around. Buy Honduran money. You will find that your NHL has a lot of purchasing power in this country. If you spend dollars expecting to get NHL then you open the door for scammers to cheat you on the exchange. You will get great prices on hotels and food here for your NHL. Also, be prepared for prices to double when you get away from the mainland and hit the tourist traps of Utila, Guanaja, and Roatan.
